The Nanoethics Group to Speak at Discovery Institute’s STEM Showcase
Presentation to survey nanotechnology’s benefits as well as challenges
SAN LUIS
OBISPO, CA – April 28, 2008 – The Nanoethics Group today announced that its
director, Patrick Lin, Ph.D., will be an invited guest speaker for The
Discovery Institute for the Advancement of Science and Technology
Education’s Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Showcase
on May 10, 2008. Dr. Lin’s talk is scheduled to begin at 11:45 am.
Dr. Lin, also a visiting assistant professor at California Polytechnic State
University (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) and post-doctoral associate at
Dartmouth College, will give a presentation entitled “Nanotechnology’s
Promises & Challenges” that discusses the basics of nanotechnology and
interesting applications—including computing, military, medicine, energy,
environment, food & agriculture, and more—as well as ethical and social
issues arising from nanotechnology.
The STEM Showcase is free to the general public and will be held from
9:30-11:30 am, followed by Dr. Lin’s presentation and the awards banquet
until 1 pm, which the general public may also attend with a $7 admission fee
to cover expenses. [May 2, 2008 correction: We have been informed
that the presentation and banquet fee is now $10 per person.] The event offers more than the usual science fair
program: high-school,
middle-school, and college-level student teams from San Luis Obispo schools
and local STEM-focused organizations will showcase their current
experiments, simulations, and projects.

important to reach young minds earlier and earlier,” said Dr. Lin.
“Students today have more history and more science, as just two examples, to
learn than we ever did, not to mention other social issues we didn’t have to
face. They are literally our future and so need to be aware of and
interested in the areas that will shape their and our futures, such as
nanotechnology. We commend the Discovery Institute for its efforts to
inspire and educate young students, and we are honored to participate in
this important event.”
The event will be held at Cuesta College’s Student Center (Bldg. 5000). The
Discovery Institute is led by Derrick Lavoie, Ph.D., Executive Director, who
is also a biology
professor at Cuesta College and a lecturer at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
